Proper Posture and a Light Bow Stroke

Learning the violin starts with how you hold yourself. Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart, shoulders relaxed, and the violin resting comfortably on your collarbone. Your left hand supports the instrument without squeezing, and your bow arm moves freely.
Equally important is handling the bow like a feather. A light, controlled bow stroke lets you produce a clean, resonant sound without tension. Think of it as guiding the bow across the strings rather than pressing down. With good posture and a feather-light bow, you’ll set the stage for beautiful music and comfortable playing.
Common beginner bow strokes like détaché (separated notes), legato (smooth connections), and staccato (short, detached) build on this feather-light approach.
