St. Petersburg Philharmonic – Grand Hall

The St. Petersburg philharmonic, the oldest philharmonic in  Russia, is more than two hundred years old. Its history goes back to 1802 when  the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, the first one in Europe, was created.  It organized the world premiere of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in  1824.  Numerous other renowned musicians of the XIX century  performed there. F. Lizst, H. Berlioz, R. Wagner, G. Mahler, A. Rubinstein, K.  Schumann, P. Viardo, P. Sarasate and others were among them. Many works of such  exponents of Russian classical tradition as Borodin, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky,  Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov were originally premiered there.

The Russian Philharmonic  is currently playing Carnegie Hall in New York.  One of my classmates that I studied with at Russian Musical Conservatory, Sergei Teterin will be 1st Violin.

Since 1988 Yuri Temirkanov has been the Artistic  Director and Chief Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic  Orchestra, with whom he regularly undertakes major international tours  and recordings.  Maestro  Temirkanov is a frequent guest conductor of major orchestras in Europe,  Asia and the United States. He holds the distinction of being the first  Russian artist permitted to perform in the United States after cultural  relations were resumed with the Soviet Union at the end of war in  Afghanistan in 1988.  Maestro Temirkanov this year is celebrating his 75th birthday and 25 years as Chief Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic  Orchestra.
